That's how mine was and I've had no leaks. Don't be afraid to use too much. A 1/4 inch bead all around with circles around all the bolt holes will work.

I would take the VIN number and go to your local Ford dealer and see if he can get the seal. You are seeing the issue as an oil leak. I see the leak as an indicator that the differential is low on oil. If you are thinking of driving it a while before replacing the seal, then at least fill the differential with oil.
