Web4 Feb 2024 · Clinical characteristics: Beta-thalassemia (β-thalassemia) is characterized by reduced synthesis of the hemoglobin subunit beta (hemoglobin beta chain) that results in microcytic hypochromic anemia, an abnormal peripheral blood smear with nucleated red blood cells, and reduced amounts of hemoglobin A (HbA) on hemoglobin analysis. Methods A total of 158 patients with suspected β-thalassemia minor were examined using CBC and Hb-electrophoresis, and polymerase chain reaction with hybridization to identify the type of pathogenic variants.
